Dr. Fouad Khan

Global Head of Standards

Dr. Fouad Khan is the Global Head of Standards at AccountAbility.

Fouad oversees the development, growth and market adoption of the AA1000 Series of Standards in collaboration with the AA Standards' working groups, AA Standards board, and scientific and corporate stakeholders. Based in our New York office, he has over twenty years of international experience in corporate sustainability, standards development, climate risk & disclosure, supply chain decarbonization, climate finance, and environmental and social safeguards. He has worked across North America, Europe, South and East Asia and Africa.

Before joining AccountAbility, Fouad advised some of the world's largest companies, financial institutions and development organizations on sustainability strategy, climate risk, and reporting against frameworks such as CSRD, ISSB, TCFD, GRI and SASB. He has held senior roles at Deloitte, the World Bank, WWF, the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and Nature Research, and has worked with Lund University, Aarhus University and the Korea Water Resources Corporation. He has also served on the Science Based Targets initiative's Technical Advisory Group and Expert Advisory Group on Measurement, Reporting and Verification.

Fouad firmly believes in connecting rigorous science with policy and business practice. He is a widely cited researcher, and his publications inleading peer-reviewed journals, including Nature Climate Change, Nature Energy, Climatic Change and Ecological Indicators, cover urban sustainability, energy, indicators beyond GDP, and climate risk. He has written extensively for scientific, policy and general audiences, with dozens of editorials, commentaries and award-winning essays in Scientific American, Nautilus, Dawn and elsewhere.

Fouad holds a PhD in Environmental Science and Policy from Central European University, Hungary, an MS in Environmental Engineering from the University of Houston, USA, and a BE in Civil Engineering from NED University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan. His research has earned him recognition as a UN Future Earth Fellow (2014), a Fulbright Scholar (2005–2007) and a WWF Luc Hoffmann Fellow (2015–2017). He has been certified as a World Bank accredited Environment Specialist, a PRINCE2 certified project management practitioner, and a UNOPS and IOSH certified Health, Safety and Environment Specialist.
